To kill a kingdom characters9/3/2023 ![]() ![]() Lira is a princess siren raised to destroy humans by her. Overall it was a fun swashbuckling adventure and if you’re a fan of retellings, this definitely shouldn’t be missed. To Kill a Kingdom, by Alexandra Christo, is a story centered on two characters: Lira and Elian. The story could have done with more solid world building and I would have loved to learn more about the different kingdoms and to delve more deeply into the magic system. The writing was captivating and the story definitely had a few twists that I wasn’t expecting. I really enjoyed the banter between the Elian and Lira, and it was interesting watching their relationship develop, I really liked our two main characters though I would have loved the opportunity to get more from the cast of secondary characters. The plot draws you in early on and I was eager to know how the story was going to end. To Kill a Kingdom is a dark and sinster retelling of The Little Mermaid, but it is so much more gripping and enticing than the Disney version. The story is told in alternating points of view between the two characters and I really liked seeing things from each characters perspective. This was a really fun and enjoyable read. Although he is next in line for the throne he much prefers being aboard his pirate ship, attempting to rid the world of sirens forever. ![]() The other is a the Heir to the throne of Midas, one of the most powerful kingdoms. I don’t think this will be for everyone, but I think it will be a new favorite for some. If I still did half stars, this would probably be a 3.5, but now I just round up. Part of that is because the tone of the ending was very different. I don’t want to go into spoilers, but I wanted more. They don’t have to be, but the murkiness did make me a little confused. I felt there was magic and politics that weren’t fully developed. The story follows two characters: a siren Princess named Lira who is killers princes so she can steal their hearts. Maybe I would describe the tone as murky. I’m sure part of that is that it’s being a YA book. It’s definitely darker, but didn’t go as far as it could/should. The whole book has a specific tone that I struggle to define. It is a pretty true enemies-to-lovers romance if you want that. I don’t hate the romance, but I’m a little ambivalent. She currently lives in Hertfordshire with a rapidly growing garden and a never-ending stack of. She studied Creative Writing at university and graduated with the desire to never stop letting her imagination run wild. I’m unsure of the actual chemistry between them. Alexandra Christo is a British author whose characters are always funnier and far more deadly than she is. They interact a lot, but it's a very antagonistic relationship. I can’t decide if it’s a huge part of the story or not. There is a romance between Lira and Elian. There were some interesting side characters, but they were pretty surface level. He came across slightly less developed than Lira. He has a lot of wanderlust and doesn’t want to be a king. Because of her cruelty, it can be hard to connect with her, at least for me. Her mother is also the Sea Queen who also turns her into a human. ![]() She notices that blood, dripping from Elian’s wound down his hand and into his knife, is being absorbed by the blade. Lira asks him to kill Maeve, wanting her to suffer. There’s two main characters-Lira and Elian. Elian balks at the idea of killing a begging creature and wonders why the vicious siren, who moments ago was ready to kill, is begging for her life.
